Improv Movement & Music Lab

Alternating Tuesdays 7:30-9:30 PM
Doors open at 7:15 PM
@ Church of the Good Shepherd, 116 Queen St N, Kitchener (near Centre in the Square and the Kitchener library)
$15 Drop-in suggested

In these sessions, we are exploring conscious improvisation. We will spend part of our time in open jamming and part of the time exploring ways we can open our awareness, sense of curiosity and play, and tune ourselves to the whole of what is happening in the group moving in space and time, investigating the question:
How might we create the conditions for energies to flow through a system in a way that gives rise to collaboration and innovation?

WHAT GENERALLY HAPPENS?

Arrive ready to begin warming up at 7:30 PM. In this way, together, musicians and movers alike, we create the field of attention to what is happening.
This is followed by an opening circle to name our intentions.
There is some structured exploration of improvisation investigating ways to generate awareness, co-intelligence, responsiveness, clarity, collaboration and innovation.
This often leads into some open dancing time called jamming.

Bring your water bottle and beginner’s mind. Wear comfortable clothing with layers you can shed as you warm up, and your bare feet. Yoga, sweatpants, or dance clothes with no buckles or zippers work well. Some people like to wear kneepads for extra comfort.

No previous experience necessary. All abilities welcome.

Contact Improv Class n Jam

Alternating Tuesdays 7:30-9:30 PM
Doors open at 7:15 PM
@ Church of the Good Shepherd, 116 Queen St N, Kitchener (near Centre in the Square and the Kitchener library)
$15 Drop-in suggested

Contact improvisation is a whole-body practice in the art of collaboration. It involves following what makes sense for you while exploring gravity, momentum, & whatever is happening in the moment, including the physical & energetic contact with your dance partners. At times playful, at times meditative, dancers may share a shifting centre of gravity that can take them into a dynamic dance of lifts and rolls, or into a subtle movement conversation.

In these classes & jams, generally, we will:
* Release tension and become present
* Awaken our senses, noticing the shifting of our attention
* Transform how we see relationship: from transaction to co-creation
* Practice “enlightened selfishness”: grow our capacity to care for ourselves while being in the dance with others
* Increase our awareness of our centre of gravity
* Practice caring for ourselves by going to the floor safely and with ease
* Learn to use the natural forces of gravity and momentum to create effortlessness and flow in the dance
* Learn to use the physics of the moment to create safe and easeful lifts
* Offer practical tools for great dances
* Increase our capacity for play and connection
* Create suppleness and strength in the body
* Have fun!
